Last Body in Motion class

Last session. We've brought our portfolios with us and after this session, we can opt to pick or change some pics if there are better stuff to replace it with.

3min- bloody disaster since I couldn't leave any open spaces on the  figure,  with or without negative spacing

3min- a little better

10 min- so so. the linework clarified the arm and waist for me, but still feels lacking.
Maybe some line on the skirt would have helped put some attention over there. 

10m- I prefer the girl on the left, but the right one's lower form didn't turn out bad.

10m- the only thing I like is how I did the shirt folds on the girl on the right,
though she's looking mighty off balanced.

I think I included this one on my Final Portfolio.

Inkwash struggles

I felt like I was struggling with the washes today, they all look so stiff D'8 The only upshoot to the day was the 10 minute works, especially that last drawing. 

Body in Motion- cartoony vs self

This morning I did another round of sleeping students on the lounge area, but the funny thing was there was a campus tour that morning.

It felt a little surreal seeing the faces on those students when a semester/year ago I was one of those people, going through the campus, seeing the students sleeping or just chilling and thinking wow, what kind of life is this?


Well now that I am a student, I could easily answer that with- if I had to wake up at 5:30 just to catch a 7 am bus to get to a 9 am class, I'd be trying to catch some zzz's as well. XD

Drawing wise this session didn't turn out so bad. When we had another round of class critique work, I think the gist of what my teacher and classmates said was I have a great grasp of poses and there's an energy to the short poses, but it sometimes borders on cartoon/stylized renderings. Like...I've learn to read/ lock down a pose so well, I tend to disregard the model at that point and start drawing a figure, but not the figure standing on stage.

Dunno if that makes sense to you people reading this. XD;
Pictures are wider than they should. This auto size seems to like squishing their width.

10 min- The left is my favorite, maybe because I was spending more time working out the shadows
and lines, I actually only used one tone instead of adding a second darker wash. 

Body in Motion- wet medium time, Awww Yeaa....

New month and tackling an old medium (Ink wash and brush) with a new technique. I've done ink wash works before under Komisar (like using one light tone and dark tone wash) back in Chabot but in this class there was an extra condition: namely leaving open spaces on the body where light hits the brightest.

I'll just combine my first two weeks of handling this stuff-

If I remember correctly, she allowed us to make a preliminary sketch underneath to get the poses down.
I guess this is why these didn't turn out so bad.  

The teacher suggested using the podium shadows to  help clarify what the woman is doing,
and the shadows also give form to one of her legs.

By the new week, we were allowed to mess around with our calligraphy pens and start adding linework.

2-3m I think I was having a bad time with this guy at first, trying to leave open spaces and whatnot,
ended up going 'screw this' and doing whatever.  

Love this model alot on the short poses, this guy is FleXible-
did you see his super contraposto on the earlier pic?

Last Day of School

Oppermann's little note on my Final Portfolio

Last day of class was freaking lovely. We all voted last week not to have to come to class at the usual 9 am (or 7am to catch 8am bus) so we met up at the campus gallery at 12 and there were donuts too. :3 Our final, besides submitting the portfolios was choosing maybe 5 pieces from said portfolio to be critiqued by both teacher and classmates. Surprisingly, a lot of us didn't pick for our 5 pieces works our teacher and classmates considered a whole lot better. As the note above said, some pieces I had chosen for her to ignore, she went and looked and preferred. 

Overall my critique that I got from the class was more or the less the same thing I've heard over the semester and midterm: I am lightning fast when it comes to locking down a gesture or pose (which she calls my talent), but oftentimes in my speed I already have like a pre-set model form in my head that in terms of capturing the human form, my drawings become generic or bland. I also have this tendency to stiffen up on longer poses because (again) I lock down on a pose fast, I spend the rest of time fussing so much about things that I overdo things. The biggest advice I got from her was to slow down, really look at my models carefully, pull back/ think carefully like where I should add another line or paint a shadow. Oh and also to take risks and mess up; if she never minded us having bad drawing, why should we? 

We finished up before the next school bus came so I wandered around the galleries checking out the Illustrations and Painting Thesis galleries (gorgeous stuff, as expected) and then for fun I bum watched this Architecture class whose finals were making these straw towers in what fashion, then were clamped to the wall and their points had to be able support weights dangling in a bucket. 

I think they pass if the towers don't break after maybe 5 pounds.

It was fun seeing the different structure designs and seeing what did or didn't work: some snapped or broke after a couple of weights, one tower snapped off his wooden base, and one fell apart from the 1st weight. The most interesting one was the one that, while the tower (the doodle to the back) collapsed on it's 'sections', it was still holding on to the bucket; even after 15 pounds! And when the teacher finally yanked the bucket out the whole thing magically went back to being a straight tower.

Meh

Way too early for this mess

The only thing I hate so bad about these Friday classes is that the bus schedule has only one ride going to San Francisco. And that's 7AM. D8< 

Getting there by 8 means I still have an hour of doing nothing before class starts, so I instead of waiting outside I decided to wait in the student lounge, where I found a couple of these guys.

You sleep around me, you are fair game (to be drawn). >8D

Thinking about it, not sure what sleeping under a table protects him from. 

If I arrived on the first Bus to this school campus, does this mean these  are over-nighters? o_o

Vine Charcoal 1-28

2nd week of drawing in Body of Motion. Vine charcoal medium. I never realized how freaking SMOOTH this thing is. *has never used one until this semester* 8D;;

Not in proper order-

I think I remember a classmate complimented me with this one, saying I had a sort of Glen Keane vibe to my drawings.
Don't care how accurate the statement is, man I was uber happy all afternoon. XDXD

I really like curvy women because they are very fun to sketch, especially when they push their poses.
